Understanding the 2024 Definition of Dyslexia

The way we define dyslexia has changed. The 2024 Delphi definition recognises dyslexia as more than a difficulty with reading and spelling. It is linked to how the brain processes information, affecting areas such as memory, processing speed, and language.

This broader view helps explain why some children struggle with fluent reading and accurate spelling, even with good teaching and practice. By looking at these underlying differences, assessments give a clearer picture of each learner’s strengths and needs.

For families, this means:

  • A modern assessment that looks beyond reading scores

  • Practical recommendations matched to why a child is struggling

  • Reports that are fully SASC-compliant and accepted by schools and exam boards

In short, the Delphi definition helps ensure that support is better targeted, more effective, and tailored to each child.

Basic Dyslexia Screening – £125

A basic dyslexia screening can help identify whether a child shows signs commonly linked to dyslexia, but it is not a formal diagnosis and cannot confirm whether a child has dyslexia.

This initial screening provides an overview of your child’s current reading, spelling, phonological awareness, and general literacy skills, highlighting any areas that may need closer attention. It can be a useful first step for families in Holmfirth, the Holme Valley and surrounding areas who want to know whether a full diagnostic dyslexia assessment is recommended.

Key points:

  • Indicates possible signs of dyslexia

  • Identifies potential areas of learning difficulty

  • Helps decide if a full SASC-compliant diagnostic assessment is appropriate

  • Shorter and less detailed than a full assessment

  • Not accepted by schools as an official diagnosis
